Australian authorities have called off the hunt for a young boy who has been missing in the outback for nearly several weeks, after fresh efforts proved unsuccessful to locate any evidence of the child.

Chronology of Occurrences

The child was last seen playing outside his family property on a secluded rural property close to Yunta, about 186 miles from Adelaide, on 27 September.

His family member stepped away for about half an hour before looking for him, only to discover the boy missing, prompting one of the most extensive land and air searches in South Australian records.

Present Position

Authorities - who do not suspect criminal activity - say they will continue investigating, but that the matter has become a "recovery mission".

Last week, authorities briefly wound down the search, only to restart it on recently alongside numerous Australian Defense Force staff.

"Official the commissioner said officials were scanning a wider zone based on revised assessments from survivability and search specialists, rather than any new information."

Search Obstacles

On Friday, officials stated that the new search had not uncovered any signs of Gus.

"The reality that the young boy is a young child, the environment is very rugged, harsh and affected by changing elements has made the mission difficult and more complex for those engaged," officials said in a statement.

"This constitutes a surprise to our relatives and acquaintances, and we are finding it difficult to process what has happened," a family representative said.

"Their son's loss is felt in all of us, and we miss him beyond expressions can express."
